Skeeter Phelan
Eugenia, also known as Skeeter, Phelan is the recent grad from Ole Miss that goes back to her hometown of Jackson to look for a job and go back to her family since she is not married and jobless unlike her friends back in Jackson. She is the one who begins interviewing maids in her hometown and begins writing the book "The Help."
Aibileen Clark
She is the first maid interviewed by Skeeter and she works for Elizabeth Holbrook. She also is Mae Mobley's nanny. She is the one you are first introduced to in the beginning of the novel and you get her point of view first.
Minny Jackson
She is Aibileen's best friend. She worked for Miss. Hilly in the beginning of the novel before being dismissed for doing the "Terrible Awful" thing. She is a very strong outspoken character that manages to become friends with the second woman she works for, Miss Celia Foote.
Mae Mobley
Mae Mobley is Elizabeth Leefolt's daughter. She is sweet and loving, and loves Aibileen like if she were her own mother.

Elaine Stein is the brutally honest publisher that publishes Skeeter's novel. She gives Skeeter the chance to get her book out there without promising that it'll launch to become something big.

Elizabeth Leefolt comes across as a pushover in the novel. Her thoughts are dominated by Hilly Holbrook's thoughts, and she does as Hilly Holbrook says.
Charlotte Phelan
Charlotte Phelan is Skeeter's mother. In the novel, she suffers with stomach cancer, but hides it from Skeeter for a while. In the novel, she tells Skeeter she has decided not to die, which shows that she is a very strong character.
